LOS ANGELES – Chris Evans may very well have hung up Captain America’s shield, but he’s earned a new title: People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive as people magazine names Chris Evans the sexiest man alive.
People’s choice was revealed on Stephen Colbert’s late-night show as well as on magazine’s website on Monday night. Evans, who has played Captain America in Marvel’s thriving super hero movies for almost a decade, takes over from a different Avenger, Paul Rudd.
“My mother will be overjoyed,” he stated to the publication for the cover story, which will be available on newsstands on Friday. “She’s proud of all that I do, yet this is something she’s really proud of.”
He is also aware that he will most likely be taunted by close friends. “Really, this will just be a bullying point,” he joked in an interview. “It’s ripe for harassment.”
Co-stars as well as previous Sexiest Man Alive victors like Rudd, Ryan Reynolds, and Chris Hemsworth are almost certain to heckle him. (Hemsworth, who plays Thor in the Marvel movies, was the first Avenger to receive the People’s Choice Award, which was first given to Mel Gibson in 1985.)
Others who have received the award in the past include John Legend, Dwayne Johnson, Idris Elba, Adam Levine, Richard Gere, Channing Tatum, and David Beckham.
Evans, 41, was interviewed at a Georgia farmhouse, where he discussed achieving a better work-life balance. “Right now, the most pleasurable aspect of my career is feeling relaxed enough just to take my foot off the gas,” he says.
Evans’ first movie role was in “The Newcomers” in the year 2000, and he got to play superhero Johnny Storm in two “Fantastic Four” films in 2005 as well as 2007. He rose to prominence, however, with the release of “Captain America: The First Avenger” in 2011.
He’s played the hearty superhero in ten Marvel films since then, finally laying down his shield after saving the universe in “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019.
Evans became a bankable star after voicing Buzz Lightyear in Pixar’s “Lightyear” film as well as playing a sadistic marksman attempting to kill Reynolds in Nextflix’s “The Gray Man,” both of which were released this year.
According to People, the actor is considering marriage and starting a family, saying, “That’s certainly something I want.”
He stated “ he didn’t really expect to speak much about his personal life in public. “There will always be something you want for yourself, or for my family and friends.”
In addition, the Boston native maintains his engagement with A Starting Point, a civic engagement website he co-founded in 2020.
Evans anticipates that People’s honor will be a watershed moment in his life and career.
“It’s something that I’ll look back on when I’m old and saggy and say, ‘I remember when…'” Evans said. “I consider myself fortunate to be involved in the debate in any capacity.”
