The family bond between Quavo and Takeoff shines through in their debut album.

“Only Built for Infinity Links,” Takeoff and Quavo (Quality Control Music)

Takeoff and Quavo, the nephew-uncle duo, have made their debut as a duo.

While there have been rumors that the Atlanta rap trio Migos is breaking up for good, there has not been an official announcement of their breakup. Instead, Takeoff and Quavo released “Only Built for Infinity Links” without Offset, the third member of the Migos.

The album starts with “Two Infinity Links,” a solid opener that addresses the rappers’ family relationship, a forever, or an infinity bond that essentially runs in their blood. The song establishes the tone for the remainder of the 18-song album, which could benefit from a couple of filler tunes in a mostly listenable but uncreative debut for the duo.

In songs like “Hotel Lobby,” Quavo and Takeoff sound best while they flow about their unbreakable bond. “Hotel Lobby,” co-written by Travis Scott and co-produced by Murda Beatz, anearly has a western southern guitar riff entwined with Migos’ trademark trap production. “I call him twin ’cause that’s my brother,” Takeoff says of Quavo.

“To the Bone,” featuring YoungBoy Never Broke Again, is a fun trap club song that feels like it would be ideal for the summer or to dance to on TikTok. “Mixy” is a departure from the album’s great energy — it slows down as much as trap music can do and speaks from the heart about a tense relationship, featuring R&B songstress Summer Walker.

All in all, “Only Built for Infinity Links” is an album orchestrated for Migos fans that features big hitters in the R&B/rap genre such as Gucci Mane in an extreme, self-assured “Us vs. Them” and “Chocolate” featuring Gunna as well as Young Thug.

However, the album does not go to great lengths to diversify Migos’ extremely successful music formula in order to attract new fans.
