NEW YORK –  A biopic of Snoop Dogg is in the works.

Snoop Dogg, the 51-year-old rap star, will produce a film about his life, Universal Pictures confirmed on Wednesday. Joe Robert Cole, who co-wrote the first two “Black Panther” films, will write the screenplay, and Allen Hughes, the director of “Menace II Society,” will direct.

“I spent a long time waiting to place this undertaking together because I sought to choose the best director, the best writer, as well as the best movie company I could collaborate with who could recognize the legacy that I’m trying to portray on screen, as well as the memory that I’m trying to leave behind,” Snoop said in a statement. “It was the ideal marriage.” It was holy matrimony, not holy macaroni.

The tale of rap group N.W.A. was previously adapted into the hit 2015 film “Straight Outta Compton,” and the renowned Eminem biopic “8 Mile” was officially launched in 2002. According to Cole, the studio “has proven they can guide a film like this to something special.”

The chairman of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, Donna Langley, stated that she met with Snoop pretty soon after he acquired Death Row Records. His signing came just days before Snoop performed with Dr. Dre, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, as well as Kendrick Lamar in the Super Bowl halftime show in February.

Snoop Dogg rose to prominence in the early 1990s as a Dr. Dre collaborator on the West Coast rap scene. In his three-decade career, he has sold over 35 million albums worldwide. He will co-produce the film with Sara Ramaker and Hughes. Can’t wait for the Snoop Dogg Biopic?
